Chapter 1

Kira

“Belly check! Belly check!” Priscilla cheered from my phone. I propped it up with a candle and stood a little farther away. I pulled up my shirt and turned sideways to show her my baby bump. Every time we facetimed since I got pregnant, she would do this. At eighteen weeks, my bump was obvious, but she did this even when I was flat.

“You look so beautiful, Kira,” she said with a dreamy voice. “Ugh, I am so jealous you girls are pregnant at the same time.”

I giggled, covering my stomach, and reached for my phone. “Bea has five more weeks on me.”

She groaned again. She really wanted all of us to be pregnant at the same time even though we were not together. She wanted our kids to be close in age and be best friends.

“I am too late,” she sighed and then had a naughty smile. “Still, trying every day, though.”

“Ew,” a flat voice said, and Priscilla gasped. “He is like my brother,” the young voice said, and I recognized Verona Vasile.

Priscilla rolled her eyes playfully at the girl, but I couldn’t see what she did in return. When her attention was back on me, I asked, “Where are you?” Spending time with Verona was not a weird thing for her, but I didn’t know they hung out so casually that she called me while she was with her.

Priscilla’s eyes glowed with excitement. “I am babysitting. Isabella is in labor.”

God, it was really baby season. “And you are talking to me while babysitting?”

“Ah, Verona and Valerio are helping me immensely.”

“I am not helping,” Verona’s voice came from the side. “I don’t like children.”

Priscilla gave her a smile. “Aren’t you the sweetest?”

I heard Verona mumble, “I am not.”

“Valerio is playing with Clara and Tony. He is good with kids, and I need some time off. I cannot even imagine how hard it is gonna be for Bella and Alessio.”

“It was twins, right?” I asked. We talked a lot, so she knew almost everything going down here in New York, and I knew what was happening in Chicago. These days mostly everyone was just having babies. Priscilla was trying to conceive, so the only one left out was Mia Vasile. She must have been close to wanting kids as well. Her husband was Capo, after all.

Priscilla nodded to my question. “Two boys, Giulio and Luca.”

“Nice names,” I smiled.

“Did you start thinking of names?”

I shook my head. “Today, I have an appointment. If I can learn the gender, I can start thinking.”

“I am sure you’ll find something amazing. Adrian was an amazing choice.”

I smiled, looking at my three-year-old running with our pug, Noodle. Gabriele grew up with dogs, and even though he was not as dog crazy as Priscilla, he wanted our son to have a pet growing up as well. I couldn’t bring myself to have a big dog. Noodle was cute enough for me to accept, and Adrian loved him.

“I’ll let Gabriele choose the name this time,” I answered Priscilla.
